What must I do to get eternal life? This is such an important question. It is probably the most important question we can ever ask.
In the story from Jesus’ life today, we see that a rich man asked Jesus this same question. What must I do to get eternal life ? In response, Jesus asked the rich man whether he had tried to live a good life and follow the commandments. The man said he had. Then Jesus told him that this was not enough. He told the man to sell everything, give the money to the poor and follow him. The man was shocked!
Sell everything!
From Jesus’ answer, it seems that the price of eternal life is putting aside everything that gets in the way of following Jesus. One might ask why? The answer is found in another part of the Bible where Jesus defines eternal life. He says this: ‘Eternal life is to know the only true God and Jesus Christ who God has sent’. Following Jesus , without hindrances means we are listening to his voice and
we are living in relationship with him. This IS eternal life!
After watching this Bible story, listen to a story of a successful business man ,who in recent years, like the rich man, learnt that following Jesus can be costly, yet can lead to a deep peace in one’s life.

18 A certain ruler asked him, “Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”19 “Why do you call me good?” Jesus answered. “No one is good—except God alone. 20 You know the commandments: ‘You shall not commit adultery, you shall not murder, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, honor your father and mother.’[a]”
21 “All these I have kept since I was a boy,” he said.
22 When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “You still lack one thing. Sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”
23 When he heard this, he became very sad, because he was very wealthy. 24 Jesus looked at him and said, “How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God! 25 Indeed, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.”
26 Those who heard this asked, “Who then can be saved?”
27 Jesus replied, “What is impossible with man is possible with God.”
